Why Every Dog’s Training Journey Should Start with an Initial Behavior Consultation

Let’s be honest—dogs don’t come with instruction manuals. Even if they did, most of us would skip straight to the chapter on “How to Stop Your Dog from Chewing Your Favorite Shoes.” That’s why, at Woof Wisdom, we always start with an initial behavior consultation before any training program.

Why We Start Here

This session is a little more talk, a little less action—but don’t worry, training does happen! The consultation allows me to:

  • Understand your dog’s personality, history, and triggers

  • Identify the real reasons behind behaviors (beyond the obvious “he stole my sandwich”)

  • Build a clear plan tailored to your household

Skipping this step is like trying to bake a cake without a recipe—you might get something edible, but it’s probably going to be a hot mess.

Why Online Consultations Often Work Better

Whether you’re in Seattle, navigating busy city life, or in Aberdeen, wondering if you need to drive to see me, online consultations are often the most effective first step. Here’s why:

Dogs naturally gravitate toward the clearest communicator in the room—and usually, that’s me (Kristine). But during online sessions, your dog doesn’t have me physically present, which means they focus on you, the person who will be guiding them every day. I coach you through exercises that connect you with your dog, focus, respond, and enjoy training. By the time any in-person sessions happen, your dog is already tuned in to you—not just me.

Online sessions also let me see your dog in their natural environment, giving a more accurate picture of behavior than any clinic visit could. No stress, no artificial distractions—just real-life learning.

Even local clients in Washington state benefit from this approach, and many Seattle and Aberdeen families have found online consultations set the foundation for faster, more effective, and more enjoyable training.

Bottom Line: Why This Is Best Practice

An initial online behavior consultation isn’t just convenient—it’s the gold standard for starting training the right way. Your dog learns to focus on you, the person who really matters in day-to-day training, rather than getting distracted by me (even though I’m fabulous).

This approach sets up clear communication, consistent reinforcement, and a solid foundation—all the things that make future training smoother and more effective. Whether you’re in Seattle, Aberdeen, or anywhere in the world, starting online is simply best practice for a stress-free, successful training journey.
